We are well and truly on the export bandwagon now.
As the reputation of English sparkling wine gains ground around the world, so too do our own sales overseas. Having been sold in the prestigious wine shop Soif d’Ailleurs in Paris for almost a year now, we were ready to spread our wings a little further afield. To Italy, in fact – where Exton Park is now distributed by the country’s leading sparkling wine specialist, family-owned Premiere of Modena…
Who would have believed it – talk about coals to Newcastle or ice to the Eskimos. Now it is English fizz to the home of Prosecco. When our Sales Manager Kit Ellen showed our range to 600 of Italy’s top buyers and sommeliers at the company’s Annual Portfolio tasting recently he was mobbed.
‘It was phenomenal’ says Kit. ‘Everyone wanted to try this new, emerging wine sector that is on everybody’s lips. And it was – quite literally!’ Orders were placed on the spot.
One of the first customers for Exton Park wines in Italy was a famous restaurant in Merano, Trentino – who are planning to pour them at a summer fashion event with designer Salvatore Ferragamo. Now that IS a turn up for the books…!
Meanwhile, our hardworking team back at the vineyard could not sit back and rest on their packing laurels. Soon they were hard at work again, with boxes and pallet wrap, preparing another shipment – this time for the States.
Specialist distributor Primrose Fine Wines will be selling our award-winning wines into top restaurants and boutique retailers in New York State, where English fizz is already seen as this year’s ‘must have’ wine. Englishman Ian Primrose, who previously worked in US corporate IT, is keen to promote his country’s products – and capitalise on his wealth of contacts in New York City and beyond.
‘This is exactly where we want to begin in the US’ explains Kit.’ It is always important to establish the premium ground, particularly for a single estate like ours, where production is limited due to our policy of low yields and top quality. Obviously this is the start of our relationship with the USA. We also have a longer term goal to target the West Coast, where the demand for this fashionable sparkling wine grows daily. ’
And now Kit has Scandinavia in his sights…….watch this space!
