Fred the Chameleon

We all love our Vineyard Manager’s characterful collection of jerkins and felt hats that he wears around the estate – in fact, it is quite hard to get him out of them. So it was quite a surprise to see how well he can ‘scrub up’!

Fred recently had the honour of becoming the youngest member of the Charlton Hunt Club, an elite gentlemen’s dining club, with its own traditional livery. The Club, under the patronage of the Duke of Richmond and Gordon, the Viscount Cowdray and Lord Egremont, holds an Annual Dinner on 26th January in commemoration of the most famous day in Charlton Village history, known as the ’Grand Chase’ . In 1739, the Duke of Richmond’s hounds ran continuously from 8am to 6pm over 57 miles – a sporting record still respected today.

This year, Fred was introduced into the Club, and took his place alongside his father, Anthony Langdale, the Treasurer, and President Simon Rees for the dinner held at Fox Hall, the historic hunting lodge built in 1729 by the first Duke in the village of Charlton near Goodwood.

And naturally, Exton Park’s gold medal-winning Blanc de Blancs 2011 was poured as the aperitif…..
